The trip to visit my mother has involved extensive strategic planning. She lives less than 800 km from where I live. It’s the same continent and my car makes the trip on one tank of petrol (which is also the main reason why I can’t have an e-car). The plane ticket costs a ridiculous amount and can be booked at short notice, but I can’t fly. The risk of infection is simply too big, and my mother will soon be 80 years old. That’s why I’m forced to drive, even on long journeys.
Die Reise, um meine Mutter zu besuchen, hat eine ausgiebige strategische Planung vorausgesetzt. Sie wohnt nicht einmal 800 km von dem Ort entfernt, wo ich wohne. Es ist der gleiche Kontinent und mein Auto schafft den Weg mit einer Tankfüllung (das ist auch der Hauptgrund warum ich kein E-Mobil haben kann). Das Flugticket kostet ein lächerlicher Betrag und lässt sich kurzfristig buchen, aber ich kann nicht fliegen. Das Risiko einer Ansteckung ist schlicht zu gross und meine Mutter ist bald 80 Jahre alt. Darum bin ich gezwungenermassen ein Autofahrer, auch auf langen Strecken.
I would have loved to finally write about something else than Corona but I cannot. I feel as if I am sitting in a train and actually waiting for the moment when I should get off. The train is getting slower and slower and the exit is still not in sight. There is no message regarding a delay. But it is clear to everyone on the train that the train is already very late. The train comes to a standstill and I don’t know why. In the middle of the field.
You can’t get off, you can’t do anything but wait. An endless loop without a schedule. For us, who are used to being in control of our own lives and time, it is horrible. The loss of control is immense. We have to get used to being completely constrained by external circumstances. A ray of hope? Yes, that is missing.
Read More »Ich hätte liebend gerne endlich über etwas anderes geschrieben als über Corona aber es geht nicht. Ich fühle mich als ob ich in einem Zug sitzen würde und eigentlich auf den Moment warte, wo ich aussteigen sollte. Der Zug wird immer langsamer und der Ausstieg ist immer noch nicht in Sicht. Es gibt keine Meldung bezüglich einer Verspätung. Aber allen in dem Zug ist klar, dass der Zug schon jetzt eine grosse Verspätung hat. Der Zug kommt zum Stillstand und ich weiss nicht warum. Mitten im Feld.
Aussteigen kann man nicht, man kann nichts machen, nur warten. Eine unendliche Schleife ohne Zeitplan. Der Kontrollverlust ist gross. Man muss sich daran gewöhnen, durch äussere Umstände vollständig eingeschränkt zu werden. Ein Lichtblick? Ja, der fehlt.

Helen was very happy when she became a grandmother. Finally, she thought. The risk was great that her only daughter would rather have a career than take the time to give birth to at least one child.
Helen was a dedicated grandmother. Whenever her daughter needed help, she was there and helped where necessary, even though she was still working 100%. But that was before Corona. In March everything changed. The visits became fewer and fewer and more and more distant, one was not allowed to hug each other.
Helen was in the risk category with her diabetes and although it was very difficult for her, she reduced her visits to her daughter and grandchild to a Sunday afternoon walk with them. The little one began to become estranged from Helen. This hurt even more.
Read More »Helen hat sich sehr gefreut als sie Grossmutter wurde. Endlich, dachte sie sich. Das Risiko war gross, dass ihre einzige Tochter eher Karriere machen würde, als sich die Zeit zu nehmen, um mindestens ein Kind zur Welt zu bringen.
Helen war eine engagierte Grossmutter. Immer wenn ihre Tochter Hilfe brauchte, war sie da und half wo notwendig, obwohl sie selber noch zu 100% arbeitete. Das war aber vor Corona. Im März wurde alles anders. Die Besuche wurden immer weniger und immer distanzierte, umarmen durfte man sich nicht.
Helen mit ihrem Diabetes war selber in der Risikokategorie und obwohl es ihr sehr schwerfiel, reduzierte sie ihre Besuche bei ihrer Tochter und dem Grosskind auf einen Sonntagnachmittag Spaziergang mit ihnen. Der kleine begann von Helen zu entfremden. Das schmerzte noch mehr.

Get out of the fog, which can be so thick that it completely envelops you, swallows you and takes your breath away. The fog gets on my nerves. Every now and then when I get up in the morning and now, unfortunately, far too often in autumn, there is nothing to see out of the window. Only a thick white layer of fog. This white can be very persistent and just stays lazy in the valley where I live. Now and then it stays the whole day until late in the evening. If you can endure several such days in a row without becoming depressed, you have a very robust constitution. Actually I am such a person, but my energy storage is not infinite either. Sun, air and exercise usually help.
Read More »Raus aus dem Nebel, der so dick sein kann, dass er einem vollständig umhüllt, ganzheitlich verschluckt und einem die Luft zu atmen nimmt. Der Nebel macht mir zu schaffen. Ab und zu wenn ich am Morgen und jetzt im Herbst leider viel zu oft, aufstehe, gibt es aus dem Fenster nichts zu sehen. Nur eine dichte weisse Schicht Nebel. Dieses Weiss kann sehr hartnäckig sein und bleibt einfach in Tal, wo ich wohne, faul liegen. Ab und zu bleib es den ganzen Tag bis spät am Abend. Wer ohne depressiv zu werden mehrere solche Tage hintereinander ertragen kann, hat eine sehr robuste Verfassung. Eigentlich bin ich so eine Person, aber auch mein Energiespeicher ist nicht unendlich. Sonne, Luft und Bewegung helfen meistens.
Read More »When we were locked up at home in March this year along with our worries and fears, it was almost unbearable. I walked the same route up the mountain almost every day. And I did it in every weather. I had to get out, clear my head, see the city below me from a different perspective, keep my distance. The path I took was incredibly steep. I felt like a chamois, like a person who only knows sports from television. The first few times the steepest part of the way – almost 600 m – was not possible without having a break.
Read More »Als wir im März dieses Jahres zusammen mit unseren Sorgen und Ängsten zu Hause eingeschlossen wurden, war es fast nicht auszuhalten. Ich bin fast jeden Tag die gleiche Strecke den Berg hinaufgelaufen. Und das in jedem Wetter. Ich musste raus, den Kopf durchlüften, die Stadt unter mir aus einer anderen Perspektive sehen, Abstand nehmen. Der Weg, den ich nahm, war unglaublich steil. Ich bin mir wie eine Gämse vorgekommen, wie ein Mensch der Sport nur aus dem Fernseher kennt. Die ersten paar male war das steilste Stück des Weges – immerhin fast 600 m – nicht ohne eine Pause zu schaffen.
