Die Geschichte von Stella – Das Mysterium

Stella hat 13-jährige eineiige Zwillinge. Es war eine lange Zeit nicht einfach die Jungs auseinander zu halten. Erst vor kurzem wurde anhand von ihrem Äusseren und der Art wie sie sich kleiden offensichtlich, dass obwohl sie optisch fast identisch aussehen, die Charakteren sehr unterschiedlich sind. Stella ist mit David verheiratet und er ist ein Wissenschaftler, der alle Stereotypen der Wissenschaftler erfüllt. Dazu noch ist David ein leichter Autist. Hätte er Stella nicht gehabt, wäre er wahrscheinlich verhungert. Wenn er forscht vergiss er nämlich die ganze Welt um sich und Hunger als Gefühl verschwindet von selbst nach ein paar Stunden.

In times of Corona, the little things of the past have become the big desires of the present. I don’t dream of visiting the Great Wall of China, but of being able to sit in a caffè and drink a latte macchiato. The fact that I can drink the same latte macchiato at home doesn’t diminish the longing one bit. On the contrary, it makes it grow every day. I try to remember the last time I ate out and realise that it was last year. The desires become smaller but their fulfilment more difficult, or even almost hopeless.

In Zeiten von Corona sind die kleinen Dinge der Vergangenheit zu den grossen Sehnsüchten der Gegenwart geworden. Ich träume nicht davon die Chinesische Mauer zu besuchen, sondern davon in einem Caffè sitzen zu können und eine Latte Macchiato zu trinken. Die Tatsache, dass ich zu Hause den gleichen Latte Macchiato trinken kann, mindert die Sehnsucht kein bisschen. Im Gegenteil, sie wächst dadurch jeden Tag. Ich versuche mich zu erinnern wann ich das letzte Mal etwas auswärts gegessen habe und stelle fest, dass das noch letztes Jahr war. Die Wünsche werden kleiner aber ihre Erfüllung schwieriger, oder sogar fast aussichtlos.

Die Schwimmsaison in Zeiten von Corona hat angefangen

Ich bin eine Schwimmerin. Nirgendwo komme ich so zuversichtlich in einen meditativen Zustand mit einer richtigen Tiefenentspannung wie beim Kraulschwimmen. Und jetzt sind alle Hallenbäder zu, ausser für das Schulschwimmen und die Olympioniken.  Leider gehöre ich zu keiner von diesen zwei Kategorien. Das Wasser im See hat eine Temperatur von etwa 5 Grad und da ist halt kein meditatives Schwimmen möglich.

The swimming season in times of Corona has begun

I am a swimmer. Nowhere do I get into such a confident meditative state with a real deep relaxation as in crawl swimming. And now all the indoor pools are closed except for school swimming and Olympians. Unfortunately, I don’t belong to either of these two categories. The water in the lake has a temperature of about 5 degrees and meditative swimming is not possible.

Banksy in times of Corona

The first Banksy painting I saw, and that was years ago, immediately fascinated me. The painter Banksy has an incredible creativity and creates a visual language that often comes across as funny and with a very strong message. I really enjoy looking at his paintings. His actions/performances are world class. For example, the way he poked fun at the entire art world when his painting “the girl with the balloon” was auctioned at the world-famous Sotheby’s is contemptuous and grotesque at the same time. He earned just over CHF 800,000 on Sothebys with this picture.

Banksy in Zeiten von Corona

Das erste Bild von Banksy, das ich gesehen habe, und das ist schon Jahre lange her, hat mich auf Anhieb fasziniert. Der Maler Banksy besitzt eine unglaubliche Kreativität und erschafft eine Bildsprache, die oft witzig und mit einer sehr starken Botschaft daherkommt. Ich schaue mir seine Bilder sehr gerne an. Seine Aktionen/Performances sind Weltklasse. Zum Beispiel wie er die gesamte Kunstwelt bei der Versteigerung seines Gemäldes «das Mädchen mit dem Ballon» im weltberühmten Sotheby’s veräppelt hat, ist verachtend (schlussendlich hat er mit und dank Sotheby CHF 800’000 verdient) und grotesk zugleich.

Laila suffered from lockdown. The virus deprived her of a social life and that took its toll on her. Sitting in a coffee shop with colleagues and discussing fashion, or dropping by the neighbour’s Italian for a glass of prosecco. Discussing the latest family rumours over a piece of cake with Aunt Marta at the bakery was Laila’s greatest pleasure. Nothing of it remained. Aunt Marta was so afraid of the virus that she hardly left her house. The neighbour had to increase her workload because her husband had lost his job and she had no time at all for “a bit of gossip”. And her colleagues disappeared in all directions and were unreachable.

Die Macht des Klanges

Laila litt unter dem Lockdown. Das Virus hat sie des sozialen Lebens beraubt und das hat ihr sehr zugesetzt. Mit Kolleginnen in einem Kaffee sitzen und über die Mode zu diskutieren, oder mit der Nachbarin auf ein Glas Prosecco bei dem Italiener in der Nachbarschaft vorbeizugehen. , mit Tante Marta bei Bäcker bei einem Stück Kuchen über die neusten Gerüchte aus der Familie zu diskutieren, das war Laila’s grösstes Vergnügen. Nichts davon ist übriggeblieben. Tante Marta fürchtete sich so sehr vor dem Virus, dass sie ihr Haus kaum verlässt. Die Nachbarin musste ihr Arbeitspensum aufstocken, da ihr Mann die Arbeitsstelle verloren hatte und für «ein bisschen Geschwätz» hatte sie gar keine Zeit.

Und die Kolleginnen verschwanden in alle Richtungen und waren unerreichbar.

How to grow old

I’ve read that people are not afraid of death, but of dying and actually it’s about the fear of the pain and the strangeness. It’s similar with getting older. I don’t think people are afraid of old age. Getting older brings a lot of positive things with it.

You know yourself and don’t have to prove anything to yourself or others (not everyone, but probably the majority). Experience allows you to make decisions that would not have been possible when you were younger, and the social network you have built up over the years is so strong that you can’t fall. Those who enjoy learning throughout their lives learn new things and keep up with the latest technological developments well into old age. Old age then brings with it some physical ailments and dwindling energy. For some, also limited mental flexibility. The fear of old age is more a fear of the negative consequences it brings.
