November in New York

621187_web_R_by_Sylvia Krahl_pixelio.deNew York is terribly expensive but one pays for uniqueness. That’s the law of demand and supply. I have always wanted to make my turns with skating shoes on the absolutely tiny ice in front of the Rockefeller Center. The dream became true for mere 29 dollars entrance and 15 dollars for the rental of the skating shoes. But the adrenalin kick I already got before. In the news I saw a report about two men, who had been cleaning the windows of the highest building of the World Trade Center on Ground Zero out of a lift.Read More »

November in New York

Read More »

Jogging in the city

I am travelling a lot. Today in Geneva, tomorrow in London, on Wednesday in Zug. That may sound great but is very tiring. When one is travelling and working, one sees Big Ben, the Parliament and the Castle from the outside, when passing by, but one never has time to sit in a café, to process all the impression, to visit sights. One is driven by obligations and appointments.Read More »

Read More »

2nd advent in Madrid – traces of the economic crisis?

Business required it that in December I visited London, New York and Madrid. It is Christmas atmosphere everywhere. There is glitter at every corner; nativity sets and nut crackers (the hit of the London season) are in the shop windows and Christmas songs sound from the shops. Fundraisers try it more reserved like in London or they rock and rap like in New York to motivate the hearts to donate. Read More »

Read More »

Queue at the ladies‘ toilet

Often I think that many architects do not sufficiently consider the gender-specific differences. At almost every major event and by this I don’t actually mean the Olympic Games but theatres, cinemas, etc. there is the phenomenon of queues at the ladies’ toilet. At the men’s toilet this phenomenon does not exist. I admit that modern buildings got a bit better but I still regularly queue at such locations. Read More »

London was yesterday, today is Istanbul

For the first and last time I have been to Istanbul almost 30 years ago. Back then during my studies I earned my money as travel guide. The journey to Istanbul was very special. I had a group of about 40 young people and a railway wagon. More precisely a sleeping car. We always travelled during the night, arrived in the morning in a city, visited the city and in the evening our journey continued. Hotel accommodation we only had in Istanbul. Read More »

Read More »

My first presentation in London

At the beginning of my tax career, my English was poor. Very poor. I don’t want to claim that it is now excellent. But back then even a conversation in English was difficult, a presentation unimaginable.

My back then boss had been asked to give a presentation on the Swiss VAT system in London. He felt very flattered and he agreed even though his English was even worse than mine. The task to prepare the presentation ended up on my desk. Read More »
