CANADA: No more surtax on steel and aluminium as from 20, May 2019


On May 17, 2019, Global Affairs Canada released a joint statement with the United States, announcing the elimination (which became effective May 20, 2019) of all tariffs imposed by the United States under section 232 of the Trade Expansion act of 1962 (19 USC §1862) – duties on steel and aluminum, and all retaliatory tariffs imposed by Canada

Both countries have also agreed to terminate all pending litigation between them in the World Trade Organization, with respect to the section 232 duties on steel and aluminum and Canada’s retaliatory surtax.Read More »

EU – Possible additional duties on products of US origin


The US has announced safeguard measures in the form of additional duties on imports of certain steel and aluminum products into the US. United States of America – Steel and aluminum tariffs due 23 March


As anticipated, President Trump has signed proclamations imposing tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum that are set to take effect from 23 March 2018. The tariffs apply across the board, although there is an indefinite exemption for Canada and Mexico due to their ‘shared commitment’ to each other’s national security, efforts to address ‘excess’ steel capacity, and the economic integration between the three countries.
