How do you choose your car? By its HP? By the time it takes to reach 100km/h? If your answer is YES, I’ll bet my bottom dollar you’re male!?
Of course I choose my car by its colour. My first car was red. I wanted a red car and I knew exactly which red it must be. Red is not always red! I really wanted to buy a small red Mazda. As at the time I didn’t have much money, it had to be second-hand. But they didn’t have red Mazda. Nowhere. After 2 unsuccessful attempts I had had enough. I certainly don’t want to spend my free time with unfriendly second-hand car dealers. The car‘s not worth that much to me. I look around and behold, in the corner there’s a car in a wonderful RED. Perhaps a bit lighter red than I had thought of, but only a little bit. Let’s have it! What does it cost? Wonderful price, well within my budget. I buy it. Then I bought a Mitsubishi. A red Mitsubishi. We had a wonderful time together. He (I called him Alfred) was really great.
Last year it was again time to buy a new car. That’s no fun for me, but it has to be done. One Saturday I went with my son (5 years old) to the playground by the Lake of Zürich. We dig in the sand, climb, run and, as always, we get quite dirty and scruffy. Then we take the tram back. By Mythenquai there is quite a large car showroom. We both look through the window. It was love at first sight. The A5 stood there, graceful and silent. Its form divine perfection. Yes, I thought, this is the car I am going to have! My son and I entered the showroom. It was empty, apart from the cars on show and the voices we could hear in the room behind. We looked at the A5. He sat behind the wheel, I looked at the elegant wings. We tried all the seats, looked at the prices (good heavens!) and the different colours. It was clear, such elegance could only bear black. Nothing at all should detract from its grandeur. No-one took any interest in us, no-one comes and talks to us. Clear, today the pair of us look as if we could just about afford or almost afford a second-hand Mazda. But I had to ask how long it would take to deliver the A5. We go into the room at the back and disturb the men unwillingly. A young man, 25 +, dealt with us. But his interest was slight, very slight. Until I took out my visiting card. Amazing, the effect that a small piece of paper can have. Drinks and every attention were on offer immediately. He was also given a model car, because the large one had a 4 months delivery time. I was sure, I wanted the A5.
But I was also sure that I wouldn’t buy the car there. I don’t want to be defined by my clothing or my visiting card!
